How to Choose the Right College Major

Choosing your major in college doesn’t have to complicated. Whether you’re undeclared or looking to switch to a new major, follow these tips to help you pick out the college major that’s right for you:

Take a GE class that interests you

If you’re undeclared, sign up for classes that genuinely interest you even if they’re outside your comfort zone. Choose your GE classes wisely. This is your chance to explore a variety of subjects so use the opportunity to solidify your interests.

Talk to professors and students in different departments

Professors can give you insider knowledge about what it takes to succeed in a certain major. Look up professors’ office hours and schedule a time for them to answer your questions. Most importantly, ask other students! Talking with other people in your potential major can help you narrow down your choices.

Do your research

Okay so, you’ve taken an intro class, met with a professor and asked your roommate’s friend of a friend about their major, but you’re still unsure about what you should do. Get to researching! Know what you’re getting yourself into, and look up what career paths you can take with different majors. Make sure you’re choosing the correct major so you’re qualified for the field you want to get into.

Be honest with yourself

At the end of the day, only you can decide what major is the best fit for you. If you’re honest with your abilities and your interests, then choosing a college major will come naturally. College is challenging enough so do yourself a favor by picking a major that excites you.

If you can’t pick, double major or add a minor!

You don’t have to decide between two majors you like equally. Double majoring or picking up a minor is always an option.  Double majoring tailors your unique college experience to your interests so you don’t feel like you’re missing out.
