Bandaloop- Downstream

The world’s leading vertical dance company performs a breathtaking new work on the facade of the Green Music Center.
Downstream brings together BANDALOOP Artistic Director/choreographer Melecio Estrella and composer Kevin Farrell in their shared hometown of Rohnert Park along with an ensemble of dancers and musicians.
As two children of parents who ‘escaped’ the rough edges of San Francisco for the promised tranquility of Sonoma County and are now both established artists back in urban environments, Estrella and Farrell will create a sonic and choreographic world where soundscapes of dense urbanity merge with the bucolic expanses of the land of their childhoods.

2024 Biology Department Colloquium Lecture, “Molecular Evidence of Anteroposterior Patterning in Adult Echinoderms or, Are Sea Stars All Head With No Body?”

Dr. Chris Lowe trained as a biologist in the UK at Sussex University. He moved to The USA for graduate training with Greg Wray at SUNY Stonybrook in the Department of Ecology and Evolution, where he worked on the evolution of body plans and the origin of the echinoderms. Following his PhD. he worked as a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley working on the origin of chordates focussing on the evolution of the vertebrate central nervous system, first in Mike Levine's lab, then with John Gerhart and Marc Kirschner from Harvard. He moved to Stanford in 2010 and his lab is based at Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey. Before COVID, we received word from our partners in Colorado that they responded to requests for additional blood from two of the three hospitals treating victims of the tragic STEM School Highland Ranch shooting. This response was in addition to the blood supply already on the shelves at those hospitals, ready and waiting for those who needed transfusions. New Century Chamber Orchestra

One of only a handful of conductorless chamber ensembles in the world, New Century Chamber Orchestra includes 19 string players from the San Francisco Bay Area as well throughout the United States. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment from the musicians and concerts of remarkable precision, passion, and power. British violinist Daniel Hope serves as the ensemble’s Music Director, bringing a new era of vibrancy and leadership.
Pianist Awadagin Pratt joins Daniel Hope and New Century for this program of potent 20th century American works for strings that speak to our collective emotions. Coping with the senselessness of war is the heartbeat of the program’s first half, with composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson confronting his concerns about the Korean War through his work Grass. In contrast, composer David Diamond wrote his exuberant work Rounds to dispel the gloomy wartime mood of the 1940s in vivid fashion. The program closes with Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium), an epic work for solo violin, strings and percussion inspired by the ancient Greek debate over love in its many forms.

Arabic Mathematics

ARABIC MATHEMATICS presented by Sam Brannen, Sonoma State University

There exists a common misconception that the period spanning approximately 1000 years, from the conclusion of ancient Greek mathematics to the sixteenth century, witnessed minimal mathematical activity. The prevailing notion suggests that aside from specific Arabic translations of Greek texts, which preserved Europeans' knowledge during the European Renaissance's onset, little mathematical progress occurred. However, contrary to this belief, many concepts attributed to European mathematicians in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries had been developed by Arabic/Islamic mathematicians around four centuries earlier. This presentation will highlight some of the significant contributions made by Arabic/Islamic mathematicians from the late eighth century to roughly the mid-fifteenth century.

All lectures are open to the public in Stevenson 1301 for both *On Campus(OC) & Zoom Speakers.

All lectures will be live streamed via zoom platform. (Email the alliance@sonoma.edu for remote access instructions one week before each lecture. )

Featured Speaker Today: Ashley Greene, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Keene State College

Join us for the 41st Annual Sonoma State University Holocaust and Genocide Lecture Series. This lecture series has brought many outstanding Holocaust and genocide survivors, liberators and rescuers, as well as leading scholars in the field to SSU. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this series is the personal eyewitness accounts of Holocaust survivors and more recently survivors of the Rwandan, Cambodian, and Bosnian genocides. Our audience is challenged to face the difficult reality of man’s brutality and inhumanity, and to reflect on the common and varied causes of genocide. We also bear witness to the astounding human capacity for resilience. Students are encouraged to consider issues of individual accountability and what each of us can do to prevent genocide.   For questions or more information, email, bittner@sonoma.edu

This is possible because of the generosity of selfless donors.

Sonoma Film Institute Screening - SHORT CUTS
Apr
14
4:00 PM16:00

Sonoma Film Institute Screening - SHORT CUTS

Robert Altman’s wildly ambitious film uses the short stories of Raymond Carver to piece together an allegorical world of characters who make up the less glamorous portion of America. There are nine stories in all, interwoven in an innovative, jazz-like structure, and so many different characters that at least one of them is bound to strike close to home. Though this sort of summary does little justice to the stories, they go as follows: Annie Ross plays a decaying saloon singer whose daughter (Lori Singer) is a classical cellist, in a story in which their two kinds of music intonate the emotional dissonance between parents and children, lovers and losers; a young mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) works as a telephone sex girl; and cop (Tim Robbins) cheats on his wife (Madeline Stone) with another woman (Frances McDormand) whose helicopter pilot ex-husband (Peter Gallagher) takes a grotesque revenge on her; a waitress (Lily Tomlin) married to a boozing limo driver (Tom Waits) accidentally hits the young son of a TV commentator  (Bruce Davison) and his wife (Andie McDowell), and Davison’s father (Jack Lemmon) does a nine-minute confessional speech that’s almost unbearable in its naked self-exposure. Lyle Lovett is a baker who plays a bizarre role in this family’s fate; three buddies (Fred Ward, Buck Henry and Huey Lewis) go off on a fishing trip and find the nude body of a murdered girl in the river. Matthew Modine, Anne Archer, Julianne Moore, Lili Taylor, Chris Penn and Robert Downey, Jr. round out one of the most remarkable casts in any American film. (1993, 189 min.)
