Social media (like a lot of things) can be both awesome and terrible all at the same time. You can stay in touch with friends that are halfway around the world and hear about news as soon as it happens but it can also make you base your happiness on the approval of others or compare yourself to those around you. For the most part, social media isn't a bad thing. But there are times when you need to take a little bit of a break.
We've all had friends who take a break from social media during finals week to make sure they stay focused on their studies. But what about just taking a break because it'll make you feel better? If you get anxious thinking about not using social media, that's sign number one that you should take a break.
Studies have shown that social media can actually cause anxiety in users. When you use social media, you're bombarded with the accomplishments of your friends, which can be great but it can get to the point where you begin to question why you aren't as successful as they are, or why don't go on as many vacations as they do or why you don't eat as well as them.
A break from social media can give you chance to take a step back and get a good look at your life without the digital influence of others. Are you happy? Are you making choices that make you feel good and successful? If the answer is yes, then you're doing just fine. Don't let the lives of people on the screen in front of you rule your own. Make sure that you cultivate a positive online space so that you can be surrounded by people who support you and not those who make you feel bad about yourself.
