Alpha Gamma Delta, a Panhellenic sorority on campus, has been putting on a lip-syncing and dancing competition called “Lip Jam” to benefit diabetes awareness and education for over 20 years. This event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in its lifetime, becoming the highest grossing AGD philanthropy internationally. The 2015 production raised $40,720!
Every year, members of AGD appoint Lip Jam coordinators to create a theme for the event. This year “Lights, Camera, Action!” has lead organizations to select an award winning film to embody through their music and dance. Titanic, Harry Potter, and Grease are just a few of 15 performances. The only rule in creating the dance to go with it is that 30 seconds of a song from the film’s soundtrack must be included; otherwise everything is up to the choreographers’ imagination! Groups practice several times a week for months to prepare for this epic show down. “It's enough time to not only learn the dances, but get to bond with sisters. We have a little over 95 members participating,” said Taylor Arias, a choreographer for Gamma Phi Beta, the overall winner for sororities last year.
In the past, only fraternities and sororities battled for the title of Lip Jam Champion. This is the first year that non-Greek organizations were invited to participate, allowing more clubs on campus to get involved. “The Blue Barons” are a hip-hop troupe that will be competing for the first time. Alex Leininger, a 2016 Lip Jam coordinator, said, “It is so exciting to see this event growing on campus, hopefully next year even more groups will participate!
In addition to the dancing competition, there is a People’s Choice challenge. Beginning last semester—on Diabetes Awareness Day—each Greek organization began participating in “Penny Wars” to see which could raise the most money. The day of Lip Jam will feature the boxes, and whoever raises the most money will win a $150 donation to a philanthropic organization of their choosing.
Lip Jam is hosted at the beautiful Green Music Center, selling out 1,800 tickets every year. A panel of judges composed of Sonoma State faculty and community members vote for the winners. Categories voted on include best lip-syncing and creativity of choreography. This is truly a remarkable event bringing thousands of people together. You do not want to miss the 821 performers and see their hard work in action on March 4th!
