University Culinary Services is Saying This Is The Last Straw...

Plastic straws are soon to be a fad of the past. Sonoma State's University Culinary Services is continuing to make strides towards creating a more sustainable campus. To take the next step towards sustainable practices, all on-campus dining venues have switched away from providing compostable straws. Paper straws are now available by request only.  In addition to being made from a renewable resource, paper straws are compostable and disintegrate quickly in earth or water.

Over the summer at orientation, University Culinary Services handed out 2,000 reusable straws to the incoming class of 2022.

Hotels like the Hyatt and the Marriott have broken up with plastic straws and even Starbucks plans to give them up completely by 2020!

“Our goal is to get people aware about straws and to have a situation where if you have to work at it a little bit, you might think twice,” Nancy Keller said, Sonoma State’s Director of Culinary Services.

And don't worry—your favorite Charlie Brown's smoothies and Sip Frappuccinos will still be served with paper straws due to the nature of these drinks.
